E-post 1 "Strengths and Challenges of Communication"

Personally, I think I am not an effective communicator, despite that, I feel that I may have some strength in communication. One of the strengths that I have in communicating with others is that when conversing with them, I give my utmost respect by actively listening. By concentrating on what they say it helps me to understand the other side better; I imagine how is it like being in their shoes and provide a more suitable way to reply. I also try not to discriminate others regardless of their races, religion or their way of life. When communicating with people with lower IQ or EQ, I will talk to them equally without any prejudice.

One challenge I have when communicating with others is when facing difficult situations I may have poor management with my emotion which may cause others to be unhappy. An example is after a long and tiring day of school due to project work. After reaching home, your parents begin to reprimand you for being so late, and this is when I may show an annoyed face which may worsen the situation. Another challenge is when communicating with strangers I may be a little soft-spoken and shy which may result in not conveying the full message to others.

By the end of "COM150" course, I set to improve my emotional intelligence so that I can communicate effectively on complex/practical engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, making effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions. I also plan that through this course I can anticipate communication problems which could guide me picking the right channel to communicate. Before heading to the workforce, I hope that with the objectives that I set, I can communicate with all sort of people professionally, with empathy, tact, maturity and clarity. All in all, I hope I can be an active and effective communicator so that I can adapt to different kind of situations in the future.

  1. Hi Yee Tong, John here, firstly, I would like to say that you have more strengths in communication than you are aware of. For example, during our project, when some ideas I convey are bad, you can put it in a way that convinces me, yet not make it seem too bad. The way you convey it, and the tone you use, helps to keep things neutral, and not embarrass me for suggesting dumb ideas for our project.
And as for your challenges, i think that it is a pretty normal reaction, as as humans, our emotions can be hard to control at times. I'm sure that by the end of this module, you would be able to better control the emotions you convey.
    Thank You!

  3. Good day Yee Tong ,
I can see that you have very interesting soft skills. You are able to respect others and put yourself into their shoes all these requires a lot more effort and energy to do it. I really like how you choose not to discriminate others and put aside their race, religion or their way of life. This is very genuine.
Lao Tzu once said "He who controls others may be powerful, but he who has mastered himself is mightier still." I do struggle with the emotion part as well. After a long tiring day in school it is so easy to vent your anger at your siblings or parents. It happens to me too. Lets try to remind each other and improve it together.
With some positivity , confidence and persistence i believe you will be able to achieve all your goals ! So never give up ! I believe one day you will be an active and effective communicator !

  5. Hi Yee Tong, I completely agree with you on the fact that you are an active listener, for I have witnessed such an instance firsthand. Such instance I've observed was during our group meetings last semester, for you managed resolve the group's dispute just by listening and became a mediator of sorts. Furthermore, I appreciate the fact that you try to remain as neutral as possible and not resort to prejudice when conversing with others.

Regarding your issue on emotional control, I am sure it happens to most of us, especially during unpleasant circumstances. I really hope such challenges are resolved by the end of this module. And for your struggles in communicating with strangers, I feel the same way too, for ultimately we tend to protect ourselves from foreign people whom we're unaware of. Let’s attempt to conquer such fears together by the end of this course.

    Regards,
    Josiah

  6. Hi Yee Tong,

Firstly, you do have several good communication skills. As a friend and a group-mate, you are constantly listening and giving ideas. It is also true that you are a very considerate person and you will always try see a point of view from other people's perspective.

Moving on, I do agree that it is sometimes very easy to succumb to your emotions and feelings which can intentionally hurt others even if the actions or words are not intended. Emotional control is something that I wish to overcome too. As such, I hope that you can learn as much as you can throughout this course and I am sure that you can overcome your weaknesses by the end of this course. All the best and good luck. :)

    Best Regards,
    Jonas

Evaluating Listening Skills & Nonverbal Behavior

When two people or more people interact, by evaluating their verbal and non-verbal cues, you can get pieces of information which can lead to a better understanding of communication. I had the opportunity during lunch to observe a small group of male corporate workers who sat opposite me in a restaurant. Based on their appearance, I can tell that they are quite well-to-do due to their branded watches and well-dressed suit. The 3 of them are Chinese, one of them is distinctly older than the other two, and the older one seems to have a higher authority which means that the other two are his subordinates. The reason, I presume that is because the older one gave off the impression of a leader due to some non-verbal cues during their interaction. Firstly, the two younger men give off a weaker impression, as they kept on smiling to the older one while the older one did not smile back. From this non-verbal cue, I can tell that the youngers are showing a sign of shallowness which may be to impr...

Resolving Interpersonal Conflict

So what   makes   conflict ?   Perhaps  the  cause  of  conflict  is  due  to the  lack  of  communication  between two individual or even because of a  clash  of  personalities .  I would  like   to  share   my  personal experience of a  conflict  situation that  happened  during  my  days serving National Service  (NS) .  One day, we were  doing  our arms  cleaning  routine,  my   buddy ,  Ken  was  cleaning  his  rifle  and  realised  that one of his  rifle   cleaning  equipment, a bronze brush has gone missing.   Knowing  the dire consequence of  losing  a  piece  of military equipment,  Ken  started to panic and rummage around the  place .  As  I  was stationed rather close to  Ken ...
